New and replacement doors

Garage door installation for new and replacement doors

Garage door installation begins with the opening, not the door. We measure the width, the height, the headroom over the opening and the space beside it, because those numbers decide which door and which track layout will fit. A standard single door is commonly 9 feet wide and a standard double door 16 feet, but older Warren garages are not always standard, and a door ordered to a guess will not seat properly.

A replacement job also means taking out what is there. We remove the old panels, springs, tracks and hardware, check the jambs and the header for rot or damage, and haul the old door away. A new door is only as good as the framing around it.

The new door goes in panel by panel. We set the track plumb, hang the panels, install the springs and cables, and balance the door. If you are fitting a new opener at the same time, we can do that too, since a new opener is easiest to mount while the door is open and the ceiling is clear.

Your choices

What shapes a new garage door

Steel, insulated steel and other materials

Steel is the usual choice for strength and low upkeep. Insulated panels have a foam core that stiffens the door and takes the edge off a Michigan winter in an attached garage. Wood and composite cost more and need more care.

Panel style and color

Raised panel, flush and carriage house styles change how the door looks from the street. We help you pick one that suits the house, and the color and trim are your decision.

Windows and light

A row of glass panels brings daylight into the garage. Insulated glass and tight seals matter more on a door that faces the winter wind.

Springs, hardware and weather seal

The springs, rollers, hinges and bottom seal are part of the door, not an add-on. Stronger hardware and a proper bottom seal help a door last and keep out drafts and water.

Size and fit

Every door is built to the opening we measured. If the opening is out of square or the header is damaged, we correct it before the door goes in.

Start to finish

How a garage door installation goes

  1. You call and describe the door and the goal

Tell us what is wrong with the current door or what you want from a new one, and how many cars the garage holds.

  2. We come out and measure the opening

A technician measures the width, height and headroom, looks at the framing, and checks whether the existing opener and tracks can be reused.

  3. We explain the options and the price

You hear what door and hardware we recommend and why, and get an upfront quote before any work begins.

  4. We remove the old door and install the new one

We take out the old door, set the track, hang the panels, fit the springs and balance everything. Then we test the door and its safety features before we finish.

Installation FAQ

Garage door installation questions

What is the difference between a repair and a replacement?
A repair fixes a part, such as a spring, a roller or a single panel, while a replacement installs a whole new door. If damage is limited, a repair is usually enough. A door with several bent panels, heavy rust or repeated failures is better replaced.
How is the price of a new garage door worked out?
The price depends on the size of the door, the material and insulation, the style, any windows, and the hardware. It also depends on whether the opening or the framing needs repair. You get an upfront quote after we measure, and nothing starts until you agree.
What is the average cost of replacing a garage door?
It varies widely with size, material and options, so a figure would only mislead you. A double insulated door costs more than a single basic steel door, and a custom design costs more again. We measure and quote the actual job.
Should drywall be installed before or after a garage door?
Install the door first. The door needs bare, solid framing at the jambs and the header for the track brackets. Drywall and trim go on after, and our technicians can tell you what space to leave around the opening.
Do you remove and haul away the old door?
Yes. Removing the old door, springs and tracks is part of a replacement job, and we take it away. We also check the jambs and header for damage so the new door sits properly.
How long does the installation take?
Most standard replacements take a long half day or a full day, depending on the door and what we find in the opening. A custom door or structural repairs take longer, and we tell you what to expect after the measure.
What should I have ready when I call?
Know how many cars the door covers and what you want to change, such as insulation, style or windows. A photo of the garage from the driveway is useful, though our technicians will measure the opening themselves.
