What it means when a garage door comes off its track

A garage door off track has left the metal rails that guide it, usually on one side. The rollers on the door edge ride inside a vertical track on each side and curve into horizontal tracks overhead. When a roller jumps out of that channel, the door twists, hangs at an angle, or stops partway up and will not move.

The cause is almost always one of a few things. A car or bike bumped the door or the track. A cable snapped and dropped one side, so the door tilted and the roller walked out. A worn roller, bent stem or loose hinge let the wheel wander. A bracket holding the track to the framing came loose, so the rail shifted. Or the track itself was bent by an impact, which makes it a bent garage door track that cannot hold a roller until it is straightened or replaced.

A door that is out of track is not safe to run. The opener can pull the door further out of line, and an unbalanced door can drop without warning. Leave it where it is, keep people and vehicles clear of it, and do not push or force it back into the rail. The spring tension is still loaded, and a door that falls on the way back is a serious injury. If a broken spring is part of the picture, spring repair is handled in the same visit.

Before we reset it

What we check when we fix a garage door that is out of track

The cables and the springs

A snapped cable or a broken spring is the most common reason one side drops. We inspect both cables, the drums at each end of the shaft and the spring, because resetting a door without fixing the cause only sends it off track again.

The track itself

We check each rail for bends, kinks and flattened lips. A small bend in a vertical rail can sometimes be corrected. A track that is creased or twisted needs to be replaced, since it will not hold the door true afterward.

Rollers and hinges

Rollers that have worn flat, cracked, or lost their bearings walk out of the channel easily. We look at every roller and hinge, and replace the ones that are damaged while the door is already open for repair.

Brackets and alignment

Track brackets that have loosened let the rail drift away from the door. We tighten or re-fasten them, check that the tracks run parallel and plumb, and set the gap between roller and rail so the door rides freely.

Door panels and struts

If the door was twisted while off track, the bottom panel or its struts may be bent. We check the panels for cracks and kinks, and tell you plainly if one needs to be replaced.

How we get a garage door back on track

  1. Tell us what happened

Say which side is out, whether the door is stuck up or down, and whether you heard a bang or a snap. Then leave the door alone.

  2. We come out and secure it

Our uniformed technician makes the door safe first, clamping it so it cannot fall, and then looks at the tracks, cables, rollers and springs.

  3. We explain it and quote it

You get an explanation of what pushed the door out and an upfront quote before any work begins, so you decide with the full picture in front of you.

  4. We repair and realign

We replace or straighten the damaged parts, set the door back into both tracks, rebalance it and cycle it. Repairs and installations are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

Forcing an off-track door back into place is how a repair turns into a replacement.

Tell us what you see and we will explain what it needs before anything is touched.

Off-track FAQ

Off-track garage door questions

Can I push my garage door back into the track myself?
We advise against it. A door that has left its track is usually unbalanced, and the springs are still under load. Forcing it can bend the track further, damage the panels, or drop the door on you. Leave it and tell us what happened.
Is it safe to keep using the door with the opener?
No. The opener can pull a crooked door further out of line, strip the drive, or jam it in the opening. Pull the release cord only if the door is already fully down, and keep vehicles and people away from it until it has been checked.
Does a bent track mean I need a new door?
Usually not. Track is a separate part from the door, so we can replace a bent rail without touching the door panels. A new door only comes into it when the panels themselves are badly twisted, and if that happens we will explain it before suggesting garage door installation.
Why does the door keep coming off track on one side?
A repeat problem points to an uncorrected cause, such as a frayed cable, an uneven spring, a worn roller or a loose bracket on that side. We find the one that caused it so the fix lasts.
How is the price worked out?
The cost depends on which parts were damaged, whether the track can be straightened or must be replaced, and the size and type of door. The technician gives an upfront quote before any work begins.
How long does the repair take?
Resetting a door and replacing a few rollers is typically done in one visit. A bent track or damaged panel may add parts and time, and we will tell you that when we quote.

Leave it where it is

Door crooked, stuck or hanging off one side?

Do not run it again. Tell us what happened and we will come out, make the door safe, find what knocked it out of line, and explain the repair before any work starts.
