Garage door repair for Clinton Township homes

When a garage door fails, it is nearly always one of the parts that carry the load: the springs, the cables, the rollers or the track. The door itself seldom gives out first. A spring that has gone makes the door feel like dead weight, a loose cable lets one corner drop, and a bent track makes the rollers bind and the opener strain. We repair the part that failed, then check the ones around it, since springs, cables and drums wear on the same schedule.

Clinton Township is a charter township in Macomb County and a northern suburb of Detroit. It is a large township, so we come to the garage instead of asking you to bring anything in. The repair is done where the door hangs, with the parts already in hand.

A broken spring or a door stuck halfway is one thing, but if the problem is the motor, fixing the opener is usually separate work, and we'll say which one you have.

What we look at

What we look at first on a garage door repair

Is the door balanced?

With the opener disconnected, a balanced door holds at about waist height. If it does not, the springs are the cause and the opener has been carrying the extra load.

Are the cables intact?

We look for fraying near the bottom brackets and at the drums. A cable that has slipped or snapped is why many doors hang crooked.

Does the track run true?

Bends, gaps and loose mounting screws send rollers off line. We check the full length of both sides.

Do the rollers and hinges move freely?

Worn rollers wobble and cracked hinges flex, both of which show up as noise and uneven travel.

What is the opener doing?

We cycle the door to see whether the motor, limit settings and photo eyes behave, or whether they are only reacting to a problem in the door.

Our process

How a repair visit goes

  1. You call and describe the problem

Tell us the sounds, the sticking point and anything that changed recently. Keep the door as it is if it will not move.

  2. A technician checks the door

We come to your garage and go through the springs, cables, track and opener until the cause is clear.

  3. We explain, then quote

You hear what failed and what it takes to fix it. The quote is given upfront, before any work begins.

  4. We repair and test

The part is replaced or adjusted, the door is cycled several times, and the safety reversal is checked.

If the door is stuck, loud or leaning to one side, a short description over the phone is enough for us to start sorting out the cause.

Questions

Questions before you call about a repair

Do I need to replace both springs if only one broke?
Usually yes, when the door has two. Springs of the same size wear at the same rate, so if one broke the other is close behind it, and replacing the pair keeps the door balanced. We look at the second spring and tell you what we see.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
Some small jobs, like a loose hinge screw, are within reach. Springs and cables are different. They hold the weight of the door under tension and need the right winding bars and training. That is the work our technicians do every day.
How long does a typical repair take?
A spring or cable replacement is usually finished in one visit. A door with bent sections or heavy track damage can take longer, and we say so once we have looked at it.
Is it safe to open the door by hand?
If the door is stuck and the springs have not broken, you can pull the release cord and lift it slowly. If you saw or heard a bang, or the door feels very heavy, leave it closed and keep clear. A broken spring can make a half-raised door drop.
What decides the price of a repair?
The part that failed, the size and weight of the door, and what else is worn. We give an upfront quote after the check and before any work begins.
What should I have ready when I call?
Know what the door did last, whether it is open or closed, and roughly how old it is. Photos of the opener's label or the springs are useful if you can take them from the floor.
